_HISTORY: men! dou! kote!

_ABILITIES:

sᴡᴏʀᴅsᴍᴀɴsʜɪᴘ
Sanageyama is a master swordsman. He is capable of handling any kind of edged or bladed device, from wooden swords (also known as shinai) to a wakizashi. Especially skilled in the kendō style. Eventually capable of battling both Satsuki Kiryuin and Nui Harime without a Goku Uniform.
ɢᴏᴋᴜ ᴜɴɪғᴏʀᴍ (ʙʟᴀᴅᴇ ʀᴇɢᴀʟɪᴀ ᴍᴋ. ɪɪɪ)
The bulk of his supernatural abilities is sourced by this. His Three-Star Goku Uniform allows for him to transform into a giant suit of armor that resembles and exaggerates a traditional kendō suit. He has gone through two upgrades, the last one granted immediately before arriving in Tanagura. The MK. III is more mobile than his previous suits due to its slim design. It bolsters his speeds to the point that the human eye has trouble tracking his movements and strikes. Also allows for him to create illusory images and duplications of himself.
sʜɪɴɢᴀɴᴛsᴜ (ᴀᴜᴛʜᴏʀɪᴛʏ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ᴍɪɴᴅ's ᴇʏᴇ)
Previously referred to as Tengantsu. This ability comes from the sacrifice of his eyesight. Sanageyama's synchronicity with his Goku Uniform has increased tenfold, allowing for him to anticipate his opponent's moves at a faster rate due to being able to sense the entirety of his surroundings. While not confirming the extent of this, he has stated that he can see the entire world and looks to have gained a sense of omniscience. He relies on his other four senses ― smell, hearing, touch and taste, with a primary focus on smell and hearing. Shingantsu gives him a ridiculous amount of leeway because of this, sensing how far someone is by something as simple as their sweat. This will be played out fairly, as there are not many weaknesses to this overpowered ability.
sʜɪɴɢᴀɴᴛsᴜ (ᴏᴜᴛsɪᴅᴇ ᴏғ ʙᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ)
He can interact with the world and with others just as well as someone with 20/20 vision, if not better. His heightened senses allow for him to pick up on things that others normally would not be able to, such as a quickened heartbeat or the popping of knuckles due to clenching one's fist out of anger. This has drawbacks, however. He can be overly sensitive to specific things, such as fluids with hot temperatures like freshly-brewed tea. Sanageyama openly states that his tongue cannot handle the heat. He is also unable to view anything being displayed on a screen due to Shingantsu operating similarly to a sonar radar, which means colors and lights cannot be picked up on.
_PERSONALITY:

“I'm gonna show you what happens when you force a man to change.”
We will start this section off with a quote to accurately and properly represent what kind of person Uzu Sanageyama is. Prideful, stubborn, obnoxious, brave, cares greatly for others... He could be the protagonist of his own series if not for two glaring differences between him and every other character of his type ― one being his undying loyalty to Satsuki Kiryuin, President and leader of Honnōji Academy and the other being what side he's placed on because of his allegiance. As she and her Elite Four are considered the primary antagonists in Kill la Kill for over half of the series, he is often seen fighting the true protagonist, Ryuko Matoi, in Satsuki's name along with the other Devas, fully intending on taking her out of the picture in order to fulfill their leader's grand plans. This is completely unlike the Uzumaki Naruto's or Ichigo Kurosaki's of the world, who will typically reserve physical confrontation for the villains hellbent on ruling the world or hurting innocents. Viewers watching the first few episodes or characters on Matoi's side can easily believe that Sanageyama is just some kind of lackey to the bad guy, or in this case, bad girl. As Kill la Kill goes on, it is easy to see how far from the truth that assumption can be.

A few words have already been used to describe Uzu, but there is a bit more meat underneath this shounen protagonistic trope. Covering the most obvious ones first, he is filled to the brim with pride. As a result of this, he is also arrogant by default. He is very confident in his fighting abilities, and for good reason considering his stature as one of the legendary Four Devas. Even without adorning his Three-Star Goku Uniform, his natural ability with handling a sword are unparalleled, sans Satsuki Kiryuin and a few other characters that quickly humble him upon confrontation. There is an unquenchable hunger that resides within him, one that has him always desiring to fight. He is quite picky with who he fights, however; only those that he sees as an equal or even stronger than him are challenged. This can all prove to be a significant downfall for Uzu, which is in fact the case when his inability to think before acting costs him severely on several different occasions.

To reiterate, he actually does know when to accept defeat and learn from his mistakes. These mistakes come from rash decision-making and an eagerness to prove his worth to people like Satsuki. Early on in the series, we find Sanageyama interested in pursuing an official battle between himself and Matoi, someone who has proven herself as a worthy yet troublesome nuisance. He feels that he can easily defeat her and put an end to her persistence, allowing for Satsuki to continue finalizing her own plans with little concern of interruption. He does not even hesitate when threatened to lose his position as one of the Elite Four if he is to lose. Quickly does he realize how wrong he had been in this ignorant assumption. Matoi uses her innate craftiness to find a weakness in his Goku Uniform and its transformation, and the end result is a horrible loss with Sanageyama being stripped of all his clothes and initially so stubborn that he attempts to continue fighting her even then.

His rebuttal? Sowing his eyes shut and sacrificing his "traditional" sight. He blinds himself in order to hone in on his other four senses, and along the way, develops his abilities to the point that he is able to see more around him than he ever had before. This brings more changes to Sanageyama than just becoming stronger. After losing to Matoi, he never once denies that he had been beaten by her, in fact acknowledging her as someone worthy of his full attention. He firmly believes that she is the woman that took away his eyes and gave him the world instead, an indication of both respect and his intense desire to fight her and win. And he does just that, proceeding to dominate throughout their second fight so much that it stopped preemptively solely because he surpassed the limits his own Goku Uniform had. Even Satsuki, who was initially and understandably displeased by Sanageyama's initial performance, shows a change of heart and even pride when overseeing the battle and considering it a victory on his behalf.

This is considered pivotal to his growth as a character for the rest of the show. He retains a certain level of that shounen protag that he will never be able to get rid of, but he also becomes more level-headed, determined and aware of his limitations. Never once does his confidence diminish in this transition. He is still very aware of his prowess and accepts any major loss (i.e. Satsuki and Matoi) as a way to improve upon himself. There is yet another instance where he loses ― once again, terribly and embarrassingly ― to Nui Harime, whom interrupts the third and climatic battle between Matoi and himself. Another example of how Sanageyama learns from his mistakes is when fighting Nui at the culture festival after Satsuki turns against Ragyo. This time, he relies and depends on the efforts of the entire Elite Four, knowing full well that he cannot defeat Nui alone. He does not do so begrudgingly or with disdain. In order to fully assist Satsuki in her mission, he maximizes the potential of victory.

But back to loyalty. If getting his eyes sowed shut is not further enough proof of being loyal, there is plenty more to offer as such. When initially meeting Satsuki three years prior, he was in middle school and leading his own gang, indicated to having been filled with hundreds, if not thousands, of people underneath him, showing that he is also a natural leader when he wants to be. The two meet on unfriendly terms; as is the trend with Sanageyama, he challenges her to a duel along with his best hand-picked fighters. Of course Satsuki crushes them all, defeating the young Uzu with as little as her weapon's hilt. Upon seeing the fire in his eyes, he is offered a position at her side, with the sole promise that he will be able to pursue his desire of finding and fighting those worthy of it. He immediately agrees and has been dedicated to her cause ever since.

He shows that he is aware and even satisfied with being a pawn in the school president's grand scheme. Behind-the-scenes and when it's just Satsuki and her Devas, Sanageyama is often laid back and willing to follow orders with no hesitation. On the other side of that coin, he is unafraid of being brutally honest and speaking his mind, even if it's to Satsuki herself. He knows how to show respect while still remaining truthful and keeping to his vocal personality. The only individual that he has difficulty speaking to with said respect would be Jakuzure, someone that constantly teases him and eggs him along, not so affectionately referring to him as the monkey of the group on a repeated basis. They have a very back-and-forth relationship, to say the least.

Sanageyama gets his vision back at the end of the series, but he will be taken from the middle of the show ― episode fifteen, to be exact. At this juncture, he is still without his sight and is still adorning his signature blindfold. Being how he will be joining Tanagura as a Mongrel, he will be naturally unhappy about the state of affairs coming in. Kill la Kill is already built upon a segregation of those being stronger living better lifestyles, while those that are weak continuing to suffer through poverty and generally poor treatment. To make matters more interesting (or worse), this is something that was created by Satsuki Kiryuin herself, a fellow Mongrel due to her black hair. He has not shown a clear personal opinion on his views of the social ladder in Honnōji Academy, but it should be safe to say that irregardless of that, he will be following and defending whatever actions Satsuki decides to make.
